Your Three Rivers Orthodontist Discusses Ways to Remove or Prevent Stains Caused by Braces

The day has come. It’s time to get your braces removed! While you should be excited, it’s important to be prepared for staining and/or discoloration. Once your braces are removed, you may notice white areas on your teeth where the brackets were mounted. While proper oral hygiene can prevent these white areas, which are caused by minerals in your teeth being removed or worn down, there are also some things you can do to remove, or diminish, the spots from your teeth if prevention wasn’t totally effective. In this post, your Three Rivers orthodontist, Bandeen Orthodontics, will discuss what your options are for stain prevention and removal.

Brush and floss your teeth properly.

You must brush the surface or your teeth and your gum line two to three times daily while also flossing once a day. While you should do this to maintain the health of your teeth, it also helps to prevent and diminish stains by keeping the part of your teeth that is not covered by your brackets while and clean – making the difference between the white spots and the rest of your teeth less noticeable.

Have your teeth whitened by a professional.

As mentioned above, by making the unaffected parts of your teeth whiter, you’re making the white spots on the rest of the teeth less prominent.

Get remineralization.

Remineralization is the process of using a cream that contains the minerals that have been removed from your teeth by the brackets. Remineralization helps to rebuild the discolored area by adding the missing minerals. This process can greatly reduce, or even remove, unwanted white spots.

Get veneers.

For the more stubborn white stains, you could have veneers affixed to the front of your teeth which will provide a new surface for your tooth and hide any discoloration.
